What is true wealth? What should you expect if you reach the end of the golden paved road to financial freedom?

Would you be satisfied if you had a million dollars? What about 10 million? Is real wealth a numbers game or do other factors enter into equality?

Ebenezer Scrooge of Dickens the Christmas Carol was very rich for its time, but before Christmas met the three ghosts of the past, present and future.

He lived a miserable life, even cheap enough to heat his apartment.

At the same time, his clerk, along with many of his children, was portrayed as a great father, happy and loving.

Sure it's fiction, but is there any truth to this story?

A lot of people will work permanently trying to accumulate as much wealth as possible, but the sad joke is that their last words are never: "I wish I could spend more time in it.

The only answer to the question for some people; "What is real wealth?", Money is pure and easy - the more money the better.

Others will be satisfied to say that real wealth has the peace of mind to be free from debt.

Another will say that he is really rich if he can lead a lifestyle that doesn't matter.

Others may say that real wealth is healthy and is surrounded by loving family and caring friends.

There are probably as many answers to this question as there are people to answer it.

You could live in a big house on a hill, have two Mercedes in a garage and a million in a bank, and not enjoy life as much as a gas station worker and a two-room apartment.

Real wealth is what it feels like. And if it weren't for that, we wouldn't have the police, the firemen, and the soldiers who would risk their lives to make big money instead of trying to work on Wall Street.

We will not have doctors who travel to third world countries, try to make a difference instead of just staying at home with thriving practice and a comfortable life.

We will not have all the volunteers in this country who are ready and willing to help the sick, weak or helpless - or who are willing to do something to help in the event of a sudden catastrophe.

There will be no millions of people in this country who donate billions of dollars a year to charities of their choice.

So even thinking that we focus on financial matters, it is good to step back and understand that there is more to real wealth than money.

I believe that having enough money to live a comfortable life makes many other things possible.

I also believe that living in debt is simply transferring your wealth to your creditors. While this may make them, or their shareholders, richer, it really contributes very little to your real wealth.
